Yesterday, I took my kids to the eye doctor. My daughter is a veteran eye doctor goer. She’s been wearing glasses for about a year now and has had several trips to get her eyes check. Look how cute these new frames are that she wants. We’re just waiting for the “new shipment” of less expensive frames to come in tomorrow just to make sure she got the very best selection for the price.
Now for my son. Poor kid. He was dying for glasses, too. He thinks they are the coolest thing in the world. When we were waiting in the waiting room, he even picked a pair that he thought were extra amazing.
He wanted those glasses so badly that he fudged his whole eye exam. He was making up letters, and I began to get a bit suspicious when he actually spelled out his sister’s name while reading the eye chart. Still, you can’t hide what the doctor sees when she dilates your eyes, and for my son, that meant no glasses. He almost started to cry when the doctor told him. She was so gentle about it, too. He was fighting back his tears, and through trembling lips he muttered his regretful acceptance as a no glasses wearing kid.
I remember being his age and wanting glasses, too. I didn’t get my first pair until I was 39-years-old, and poor baby…it appears that my son has my healthy eyes. Sorry kid. Such is life. You can’t always have everything you want. It is a tough lesson to learn for a seven-year-old.
I have the perfect song of the day for my son today. ”Lyin’ Eyes” by the Eagles suits this blog perfectly. I should never excuse my kid for telling a lie, but for some reason, this time it was kind of sweet to me. He should know though…your eyes are the window to your soul, and they will always give you away. Especially to your Mama. So sorry little guy. We’re on to you.
