Happy Tuesday, blog readers!  It’s time for another fun Top 10 Tuesday music activity.  Today we will be walking and freezing like monsters in honor of the upcoming Halloween holiday..but, of course, in a very musical way.

All you will need for this activity is a hand drum.  Here is a picture of one from our Top 10 Tuesday instruments list. (Click HERE to see the complete list)

HandDrum

Any drum will do…even a home-made one.  Or, for convenience sake, click HERE to see one for purchase on Amazon.com.

The Activity

Find a good space in your home for walking across a large room.  You can either play this statue game with one child or many.  If there is more than one child, have the children spread out so they are not touching each other.

The game starts with each child freezing into a monster statue pose.   Begin keeping a slow steady beat on the drum.  With every drum beat, the little “monsters” can move.  They can either change their pose or take a step forward or both, but they must stay in the character of a “monster.”  Please remember that there is only one movement per beat that they hear.

To make the game a little more interesting and fun, change the tempo of the drum rhythm.  The faster the rhythm is, the sillier the game will be.  It will also be fun watching  the “monsters” move in slow motion.

Take turns playing the drum.  Perhaps your child(ren) would enjoy being the rhythm keeper and seeing their Mom or Dad be a monster!

I hope you all have enjoyed this week’s Top 10 Tuesday music activity.  For an archive of all previous Top 10 Tuesday music activities, click HERE.  Please don’t forget to check back every Tuesday for some more musical fun, and until next week, play on!
