Wow! Nothing yet about Mumford & Sons? That’s awful. I have been listening to their record Sigh No More for quite some time now and I am never getting tired of listening to it. Mumford & Sons is an indie folk band consisting of four members playing various instruments ranging from drums to accordion to banjo – the latter instrument giving their music a typical folkie sound.
The title of this album is taken from a line in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and more lines from this play are dispersed throughout the lyrics.
The music is mostly freeing and hopeful, but sometimes a bit dark as well. For example Thistle and Weeds is particularly dramatic, but the transition to the next song on the album called Awake My Soul brings a kind of relief that wouldn’t be there if it hadn’t been for Thistle and Weeds. There is literally no track on this album that I don’t like and I find it hard to name a favorite. So, among my favourites are Timshel, The Cave and White Blank Page.
Unfortunately, I have not yet had the fortune of seeing these guys perform live, but the minute I’m able I will. Hopefully they will get to the Netherlands (again) after their new album Babel comes out in September. If the single I Will Wait is a good indication of the content of this next album, I definitely won’t be disappointed.
