Sunset with my girls on Friday was heavenly AND QUICK! I even sneaked in a mother-daughter selfie.
Emma and I sat in our car at the airport this afternoon right after dropping off Katherine at the terminal. "This was a good weekend," my sometimes taciturn middle daughter declared.
"Yeah, it was," I said.
We had spent the weekend at Morro Bay along the Central California coast for the Thanksgiving holiday. We rented a house which had plenty of room for all of us. We each followed our own interests without anyone "taking the lead" over the others.
We each took our own lead and followed that. Sure, we had the baby to content with which meant we all made compromises, but for the most part, we all got to do some of what we had hoped to do and a little bit of what we had to do to keep the experience mutually engaging and positive.
This meant I saw a lot of sunsets and sunrises, visited spiritual locations - this time, labyrinths, and gratefully accepted help with the grandbaby, who went with us, too. Katherine joined me on several of my jaunts and we went with Emma to see a movie one morning.
Between Cayucos and Cambria we explored a marvelous beach with bluffs and craggy rocks and naturally, lots of photo ops.
We didn't nag Samuel to do lots of what we found fun. When he did join us he was cheerful and much to my delighted surprise, he made conversation along with the rest of us.
When Katherine's plane had problems, I circled the airport and called her to tell her I found her a hair tie, something she was without. My littly East Coast bound Grumpy Gus needed something happy, even if it was just a hair tye.
Flight delays, etc. meant Katherine was even more of a (self proclaimed)grumpy gus after we got back to Bakersfield.
I stood by the security checkpoint saying. "Insert whatever cliche saying fits here!"
I miss her whenever she is away.
Next year Emma may join the ranks of children of mine across the country from me.
I don't want to spend a lot of time thinking about this reality.
I think I'll settle into the "This was a good weekend." declaration, instead.
Samuel was even somewhat willing to be in photos this weekend. Jaxon, the least squishy, slept through what we thought was hilarious!
