My Think Piece. #2 The Brunei Postal Service

Posted on the 15 November 2010 by Bazkarim @BazKarim
We all (Bruneians to be precise) know how the postal service works. The only main problem is customer service in the post office. I don't know who has experienced this but i've heard stories....well i've read it in the papers about how non Bruneian customers are being treated there.
Im sure its just the language barrier and not racism.
You see, non Bruneians...Ok let me be more specific. Individuals who CANT SPAK MALAY (including me) will definitely get bad treatment. This is because it is so much easier to just speak the countries language, just to get things to run smoothly.
Even though English is the number one language spoken in the world.
OK back to the point, I read in the paper a few years ago how a caucasian lady (lets call her Miss X)was treated with disrespect in the post office. Apparently one of the employees behind the counter was all smiles with this malay individual in front of her (mind you she's waiting in line...probably waiting to receive a package). So when it came to her turn, that smile that was once plastered on the employees face a while earlier...vanishes from the sight of Miss X.
Its hard to remember how the article went but i remember how the employee was very frustrated trying to converse with her, which in the end both people (Employee and Miss X) ended up being sore with each other.
The end.
Im sure a lot of people responded to that email from both POVs. I mean i understand her situation because i can see myself in her shoes. Only because i don't speak malay as well. Eventhough i am FULL BRUNEIAN.....(ignore the fact that im a quarter arabic as well.), i cant speak the language.
The bilingual reader would argue this:"Why frustrate yourself with mere language problems. You've come to live in a foreign country then its your obligation to learn the language."
It turns out this topic is pretty broad...therefore difficult to deliver a point and finish it. Im sure you're smart enough to figure out the moral here.
It covers:
  1. Politics
  2. Language
  3. Racism??
  4. Common curtsey
  5. Both sides to the story must be heard.
