During the summer, not only do I get to teach music, but I also get to teach some drama classes. It is such a nice change from the rest of the year, and I really love using my theater background. It is yet another creative outlet for me, and what little kid doesn’t love any activity where they get to pretend?
I went to a performing arts high school and majored in musical theater at the school. It was a great time in my life with incredible memories that I remember so fondly. It was the beginning of my formal theater training, but when I left the school, I made the decision that I would not continue on as a theater major in college. Instead, I focused on music and theater education, and I have to say that it is a choice I have never regretted. Teaching children to love and value performing arts skills is exactly what I was meant to do in life.
Every summer, I remember just how much I love teaching drama, and this is the first time I will be able to walk away from it with something to look forward to. This past spring, I co-wrote & co-directed a musical that was performed by a performing arts club of children after a 10 week class. It was truly a phenomenal experience, and I am so happy to be able to teach that class again and continue drama in the Fall.
So, that said, and seriously enjoying my summer drama classes, my song of the day is “Nothing” from “A Chorus Line.” ”Nothing” is a song that talks all about acting classes, and it is perfect for this blog post today. Click HERE to hear the song and watch a performance of it. As the summer goes on, “I am going to dig right down to the bottom of my soul to see what I have inside”, and hopefully I’ll help all of those wonderful children do the same.
