Oh, Those Dirty Dishes…

After a long day out and about, Craig and I decided to spend the evening at home. And so, I cooked dinner for us.

And as usual, after dinner, I ventured into the kitchen to begin my least favorite part of the evenings – the clean up. (I’m sure you ladies could relate!)

Throughout the evening, I could feel the tiredness wearing on me, and the slightest headache starting right in the middle of my forehead. And so, when I started the task of doing the unreasonably large pile of dishes that awaited me in the sink, my headache grew worse.

5 minutes…
10 minutes…
15 minutes…

After a whole twenty minutes of standing at the sink, with a crick in my neck and a blaring headache, I started to grow weary, not to mention a little more than slightly impatient.

Realizing just how frustrated I was allowing myself to become, I took a deep breath. “God, you’re gonna have to help me with this.”

Die to self, die to self, die to self…

Though a few moments prior, I was full of frustration, blame, and bitterness at having to take on the burden of being on kitchen clean up, I found that as I continued to whisper those words to myself - die to self - I actually started to believe it.

In that moment, as I stood as the sink with water on my blouse and a sponge in my hands, God reminded me of such a humbling and precious truth.

Even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. // Mark 10:45.

Jesus Christ – God in the flesh stepped down from Heaven – Himself came into this world to live a life poured out in service. He humbled Himself and looked to the needs of those around Him, and considered others to be worthy to be loved and to be served.

Jesus set the example, and now He is calling us as children of God to follow in His footsteps.

Even when it comes to something as silly as dirty dishes, let us commit to serve the Lord with passion and love in whatever ways He calls us.

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. // Romans 12:10-11.
