I had the most interesting evening last night. I sat around a table with a group of people I had never met before, and we told stories to each other. I know this sounds a little nutty, but the reason we were brought together was because we are all participating in an upcoming storytelling evening with an organization called Odyssey Storytelling. I was asked to present a story, because the theme for the evening will be “Saved By the Bell.” We are all telling stories about teaching or being students. My friend, who is curating the evening, really urged me to sign on.
I am such a busy person, and what really concerns me was the fact that we’d have to talk for 10 minutes without use any notes. I’ve already written a blog all about my nervousness with this concept. (Click HERE to read my blog post, “A Better Place to Be, #729.”) Perhaps it’s a little self-deprecating since I have no time for this and get the jitters just thinking about telling a story to a room full of strangers, but nonetheless, the evening also sounded intriguing. So, I agreed to partake, and now I am using this blog as a shameless plug for you all to come see me and 5 other storytellers share their school stories. I can promise you all an entertaining evening and that you will be drawn in to some really interesting stories from some really interesting people of various backgrounds. My song of the day today is an old 1960′s anti-war song. I chose “One Tin Soldier” merely because the song starts out with the words, “Listen children to a story that was written long ago….” As I think about this song, it is a story being told in the most poetic way. I can only strive for this type of heart-felt candor when I tell my story next week. It is such a good example and a goal to keep me focused on.
