Online Piracy

Posted on the 04 May 2012 by Nickmcdonald @W_W_O_Nick_McD
Today got home from my home town where I had to go to write an exam, and when I walked through the door I was greeted by my aunt holding an email that she had printed out from Telus; It was a warning about some alleged  "Copyright infringement" that had been tracked back to our network. And yeah, it was me, of course it was, I have 450GB of my 500GB hard drive filled with pirated software, movies, games, music, I pretty much just download whatever, even if I don't use it. But it is weird, we just switched to Telus, from shaw because we moved and apparently it was better and cheaper, I don't understand why Telus even gives a damn about what I download!! It's not like I'm stealing from them, there not even liable for what their users download, they are just providing a service! You would think it would be in there best interest to just turn a blind eye, that's what all other ISPs do! It isn't any of their business to get involved in this.
I am a big supporter of the freedom of information, I think open source is the only way to go, because then, it is just better, there are other ways to make money, the Internet was never meant to be an other way for people to make money, it was meant to make the world easier!! If you are a musician, you should make money by playing music, not selling it!! And I know that that is hypocritical because I'm not a musician, and I don't contribute anything to the Internet, at least not yet. I'm trying to learn though I want to contribute, and the Internet is helping me do that. That is what the Internet is about, taking what you need, and contributing when you can. And plus, is it really stealing if all you are doing is copying something? Seriously, if you made a sculpture or a painting or something like that and someone said wow that's cool, can I take a few pictures of it so I can make one just like? You wouldn't say fuck off and make your own painting!! What is the point of that? you aren't losing anything, the other person is just gaining, there is a net gain there!!
Yeah you can say, well if you just pirate it how are the companies going to make money? And that is something, but really why should they? If you know computers at all there is always a free version out there somewhere, you could spend like $1000 dollars or whatever ridiculous amount they charge for photoshop, or you could download gimp which is basically the same thing, it may not be quite as nice, but still it is completely open source, some people just made it, then gave it away to the world. There shouldn't be these huge corporations around software, when you get down to it all you need is a couple smart guys siting at home with their computers, writing code. There is no need to have the big company with the big skyscrapers, and billions of dollars, most of the people at the top of the companies don't even know shit about computers, and they definitely don't care about anything other than making money. I've seen open source software that rivals if not defeats the competition! And the people that made these programs don't have the resources of a billion dollar company all they have is their mind.
Writing code is an art, not a business, and people that write code can easily make good money while not making people pay to use their work, advertising is where it's at and it hasn't been used at all in software yet!! At least not that I have seen. If you make something good, and make it free, millions of people will download it so there is BIG potential there, and the people who would do it aren't sellouts like the people who charge hundreds of dollars just for access to there mediocre work. And most importantly it won't be illegal!!! You can't steal something that is given away for free.
