Last night I went out to diner with one of my very favorite dates: my son. We were sitting in a booth enjoying our food when out of the blue my 6-year-old stared me in the eyes and asked, “How was your day, Mom?” He had no idea how such a simple question could touch me so, but then I went in to the details of my day for him. ”It was a good day. I taught music to preschoolers in the morning, volunteered in your sister’s class in the afternoon, took a nap, but the part of my day that has made it perfect is sitting with you right now at this restaurant,” I explained to him. My response made him smile. I knew it would, and I meant every word of it.
I couldn’t remember the last time someone had asked me how my day was, and it was all the more sweet coming from my little boy who much of the time frankly doesn’t seem to care about anything other than his Minecraft video game. He asked the question with such sincerity, too, and it really struck me as one of the kindest moments between us ever. In one little question, he showed me that he genuinely cares deeply, and as I’m describing this to all of you in my blog today, that sweet fleeting moment is bringing tears to my eyes. ”How was your day” can be the most moving words around.
My song today is one that I have always loved. ”Perfect Day” by Lou Reed is a song I wore out on my vinyl record player back in high school….long before the movie, “Trainspotting,” a movie about junkies that many people relate this song to. For me, however, I love the simplicity of the melody and the lyrics and Reed’s not-so-perfect but hauntingly beautiful voice. So, yes, my day was absolutely perfect, little guy, because of you. Your question was as good as saying, “I love you, Mom”, and that is the best ingredient to a day that there could be. I love you, too. Thanks for giving me so much care. You made my day. xxxooo
