I am so proud of my son! This is the kind of Mommy pride that is overwhelming, and for today’s blog I must gush for a few moments to all of you.
My son is a temperamental kid. If the slightest thing sets him off, he wants nothing to do with it ever again. That was the case with karate for a few weeks. Here’s the thing though…
I have been schlepping that kid to karate about 2 times per week for the last 4 years. He is a high belt rank now – at the point where he was eligible for the Cho Dan Bo belt – the belt right before black belt. It was a big deal.
His karate school was having a “rank advancement” week during winter break, and I pushed my son to go even though he really didn’t want to. Getting him there the first day was a chore and a half, but by the time I picked him up at the end of the day, he was into it again. That’s when the determination kicked in. He wanted that Cho Dan Bo belt badly.
When I picked him up yesterday, the last day of the camp, he was wearing his new half red/half black Cho Dan Bo, and when he spotted me, he was smiling from ear to ear. The pride on his face filled me with more joy than you can imagine. It was worth every argument and struggle that took us through that journey to get there. Way to go kid, you’re proud, and so am I. Big time.
My song of the day is for you. There’s actually a song from the musical Les Miserables called “Red and Black,” and it’s all yours today. Only one more belt (and a lot of training) until we get to the ACDC song “Back to Black.” I can’t wait!
