Valentine

Happy Top 10 Tuesday everyone and happy almost Valentine’s Day!  I thought it would be fun to have a Valentine’s Day inspired music activity for you all this week.  So, get out your rhythm sticks, and let’s spread a little love!

Here is a picture of traditional rhythm sticks.

The Activity

This is a simple activity.  Once person will be keeping a beat on the sticks, and the other person will be rapping Valentine’s poems.  Here are several poems to get you started.

Five Little Valentine’s

Five little valentines were having a race
The first little valentine was frilly with lace.
The second little valentine had a funny face.
The third little valentine said, “I love you”.
The fourth little valentine said, “I do too”.
The fifth little valentine was sly as a fox.
He ran the fastest to the valentine box.

For Mom

Mom, I’ve got some friends
Of each and every kind,
But a better friend than my mother
I’ll never, ever find!
I’m so happy you’re my mom!
I love you.

I Love You More Than Applesauce
(By Jack Prelutsky)

I love you more than applesauce,
Than peaches and a plum,
Than chocolate hearts,
And cherry tarts,
And berry bubble-gum.
I love you more than lemonade,
And seven-layer cake,
Than lollipops,
And candy drops,
And thick vanilla shake.
I love you more than marzipan,
Than marmalade on toast;
For I love pies of any size,
But I love you the most.

I Made My Dog a Valentine
(By Jack Prelutsky)

I made my dog a valentine, she sniffed it very hard,
then chewed on it a little while
and left it in the yard.
I made one for my parakeets,
a pretty paper heart,
they pulled it with their claws and beaks
until it ripped apart.
I made one for my turtle,
all he did was get it wet,
I wonder if a valentine
is wasted on a pet.

When I Say I Love You

When I say I love you
It comes from my heart
You hear it in your ear
And it sounds very smart
I love it when you’re proud of me
You say it all day long
And when I hear you say it
My heart sings a merry song

Change roles with your child, so they get to try both the rhythm sticks and the rapping.  Increase the speed of the beat, so your child will have to rap faster.

If you really want to challenge your child, have them memorize a poem and perform it for the rest of your family as a Valentine’s present.
