RibFest 5 Miler

Posted on the 19 June 2012 by Mattie @comfyconfident

Over the weekend I ran the RibFest 5 Miler! It was  a great way to start off Father’s Day and make myself get out of bed on a Sunday morning!

Vinnie and I woke up and rushed out the door around 7:30am to get up to Merrimack, NH. I had to register and get my bib and I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time to do that. We ended up showing up with plenty of time but I was nervous for a little while during the drive!

You never know what the porta-potty lines are gonna look like…. and I always have to wait in them. hah!

Around 9:10am everyone started to line up and the butterflies started to flutter in my stomach.  I am such a competitive person that any competition, especially a race, makes my blood flow and nerves build because I want to succeed!

But at the end of the day, I am all about having fun! RibFest 5 Miler

Once the race started all the nerves were gone and I was ready to go. Vinnie told me I had to finish in under 4o minutes because he didn’t want to wait any longer than that! haha… I always love a good challenge.
I had no idea what the course was like when I started. It ended up being an out and back, which I like because you get to see all the racers and cheer them on along the way. The only downside was that it was kind of down hill out, which meant uphill on the way back.
I ran hard through out the whole race, but I never really felt that comfortable. I was pushing the whole time. Usually when I run, I kind of get in a groove and just cruise. Not today, I really had to push myself and work hard to run at the pace I wanted to.

I ended up finishing in 36:45 minutes, second in my age group, I made Vinnie happy and accomplished my goal!  This was my first 5 mile race but I can honestly say I absolutely PR’d. While it was a great race, it was also a great wake up call that I need to start running more and pushing myself.

After the race, we entered RibFest!! It was a mini fair. There were a lot of vendors with fried food, beverages and candy, but the highlight was the BBQ booths selling ribs, pulled pork and corn bread!

We couldn’t leave without trying some of the ribs. So, we got the rib sampler from the Aussom Aussie booth. They had the most trophies!

The ribs were pretty good. The corn bread was AMAZING!!

We had so much fun walking around and enjoying the beautiful weather. It was a great event with so much to do for families and fathers on Father’s Day. Once we left Merrimack, Vinnie and I headed to my uncles house to celebrate Father’s Day with my grandparents and family. We ate more BBQ food and baked goods.
