Selling My Subject

Posted on the 20 February 2012 by Bvulcanius @BVulcanius

Coming Thursday I am going to sell myself and the subject that I teach: English language and literature. Next school year my school is going to start with a new upper-school programme. Up until now, pupils who wanted to go to the upper-school needed to transfer to another school, but no longer; they can stay with us now. Some children need a bit of convincing, though, and next Thursday we’ll get the chance to do just that.

Of course, I’m very enthusiastic about the subject I teach, but how to convince 15 year olds to share the same enthusiasm? Work will need to be done, they’ll have to do stuff that they won’t like (like reading), but I have to find a way to make and keep them interested in the subject and myself. So, I’m working on a PowerPoint presentation.

I think the best way to go about it to present the future students with goals: what will they be able to do at the end? Then I’ll tell them how we are going to get there. I’m putting the emphasis on skills and doing instead of just consuming. I’ll also explain that they are learning English not just to learn English but to facilitate future learning by giving them some examples in which the English language supports learning.

I’m extremely curious about their reactions to me and my presentation.

I’m still working on the literature part of my programme as well, because I want to make it as interesting and diverse for them as possible. However, I have a certain budget to consider.
