Kirsten Dunst channels Marie Antoinette in the 2006 titular film
More popularly known in history and pop culture as Marie Antoinette, The Queen of France. We will always know her as the girl who lost her head for living a frivolous lifestyle when all of France was plunged in hunger and poverty. One popular quote attributed to her, albeit the lack of evidences is the "Let them eat cake (brioche)" quote which she allegedly said when she was told that the peasants had no bread to eat. Now I don't believe either that she ever uttered those words but whatever circumstances that led to her execution on the block are now part of history.Sofia Coppola's 2006 film Marie Antoinette, which is loosely based on her life story shows her own set of struggles from being a naive Austrian Archduchess who was married off to the future king of France to becoming the ultimate outsider in a country which has never fully embraced her.
Not many of us get sent to a foreign country to seal an alliance through marriage. Alone at fourteen. Not many of us get to experience political power struggle in the midst of enemies. Not many of us become Queens. And certainly none of us would want to die the way she did. No I don't see her as a victim. Just a victim of her own doing and some people around her. Frivolous maybe. But if we look inside our hearts I bet there's a little Marietta in each one of us. Who wouldn't want to be dressed in that pink ballgown with skirts as huge as tents. Who wouldn't want to be coiffed in that manner. Who wouldn't want rich patisserie in bright colors all served at our foot. I dare you to imagine macaroons right now! And fondant cakes too! Who wouldn't, who wouldn't. But her own life is a reminder to us too of the word control. For if we rule and we roll on moneys at the detriment of our people, we might as well have signed our own death sentence for life and death has it's own way of giving back. Her life was her own. Some girl.
