Some Things to Look Forward to

Nim Chimpsky

There are a few documentaries coming out that I’m really looking forward to seeing. First of all, there’s Project Nim. It is a documentary from the team behind Man on Wire and recounts the story of a chimpanzee called Nim Chimpsky (a play on Noam Chomsky, an American linguist and philosopher) that was raised as a child in order to study animal language acquisition.

Another documentary I’m looking out for is Page One: Inside the New York Times. In which journalists of the NYT were followed for a year.

Then there’s Tabloid which is a story on a former Miss Wyoming, Joyce McKinney and a Mormon named Kirk Anderson. Did Joyce kidnap and abuse Kirk, or was Kirk forced to accuse her of these crimes by the Mormon church after he willingly, but temporarily, put his beliefs aside? It might be somewhere in between. It’s also about the influence the British tabloid press had in spinning the story this way and that.

Lastly, there is a documentary on violence interrupters in Chicago called The Interrupters.

I have just finished watching Life in a Day which is a crowd-sourced documentary. It consists of YouTube user generated videos that have all been taped on the same day: July 24, 2010. People from all over the world sent in their videos and talked about what and who they loved, what they feared, and what was in their pockets. It’s fast paced and the experience of watching this documentary is almost as if you’re surfing the net clicking on one link, which then quickly sends you through to another link. On October 28 it will be possible to watch Life in a Day on YouTube.
