I swear…..my kids’ spelling homework is the bane of my existence. It is such repetitive work, and I wonder if they retain the spelling words after the test anyway. I guess spelling tests and spelling work has been proven over time, as I remember all of this work from my childhood, too.
It is a struggle every night to get my kids to want to do it no matter what creative ways I think of to make it fun. There is a reason why spell and hell rhyme after all.
It always amazes me that some kids are interested in being involved in the school spelling bees. Yes, I can see the satisfaction of brainy kids winning something for their academic achievement…but heck…in my family, we are much more the type who’d win at the more creative poetry contest and story writing….not at book smart memorizing. I am not saying one way is better than the other, but oh how I wish there was a happy medium.
A couple of years ago, I was fortunate enough to see “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” when it came to Tucson. I was cracking up through the whole thing, because I just loved that there was a musical written about the mindset of spellers. My mind quickly drifted to this adorable show as I began thinking of this spelling topic. ”The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” helped to bring spelling bees back to popularity. What a fun and powerful musical! So, click HERE to hear the title song on Youtube, and spell this: W-I-S-H M-E L-U-C-K W-I-T-H T-H-O-S-E D-A-M-N S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G W-O-R-D-S!!!!!
