The Glorious Ordinary: The Peach and the Tangerine Can't Translate

The peach tangerine doesn't translate

Someone once told me I must live in an amazing place if I watch the sunrise from my window, something I choose to do most mornings.

“Not really,” I said, “I have a pretty typical late 1930’s Bakersfield house.”

I suppose the thought was I had an unobstructed horizontal line of sight with fields of tall grasses swaying into the morning star, or perhaps something equally poetic.

Well, really, I suppose I do after all.

The poetics comes not in the view but in the eyes and the heart who are looking.

This morning I was lying on my living room couch, looking out the window thinking, “If ever I buy another house, I want this same vantage point from my bedroom. My only wish was to be on the second floor, to have a second floor.” I looked away as I mused, looking at Instagram on my phone and when I looked back, the sky had turned from gray to an extraordinary painting in peaches and tangerines that took my breath and lifted it - and my spirits - straight into the present moment.

The sun is still in the distance, under the horizon line. This colorful show reminds me of trumpeters, inviting us into this new day as she is born.

My camera phone couldn’t capture it.

Instead of getting frustrated, I soaked it in even more.

Divinity makes some things impossible to “capture” - sunrise included.

If one looks at her phone at images for too long, the quick and firey morning show will disappear as she clicks “like, like, like” without allowing this daily blessing to reach into her heart, her breath, her spirit and remind her of her countless blessings.

I look up from getting ready to hit publish on this blog post and the sun just inched herself over the garage across the street. It is an extraordinary day wrapped in all its glorious ordinariness.
