The Man Who Wanted To Burn His Daughter Alive

Posted on the 18 September 2013 by Sreesha @petrichor_blore

While the nation applauded the death sentence given to the criminals in Nirbhaya’s case, this one Indian gentleman opposed the judgment. His thoughts, “Why was she, an unmarried girl, roaming with a boy on the streets at night? If it was my daughter, I would have burnt her alive.” He was one of the lawyers in this case. Needless to say, he was defending the criminals. Should this man be hanged too? Why is it that some men (and sometimes, shockingly, even women) have this sort of an attitude? Why is the victim being blamed? Why are there reports of ruthless “honour killings” in different parts of this country? And what kind of an oxymoron is “Honour Killing”? How does killing a member of the family for the sake of “family name” become honourable? The whole premise, the whole theory is flawed; the practice – brutal. Signs of a weak regressive society that refuses to let go of the chains of caste and religion and other forms of groupisms that it has bound itself in. While it may be noted that India is not the only country in this world that has honor killings, it is more than disturbing to note that an average Indian father would rather kill his own daughter than have a walking-talking rape victim roam about his courtyard. Hasn’t the victim suffered enough? Is it necessary that she be shunned in her own family? Is it necessary that she be made to believe it was her own fault that she is a victim and that a hot-blooded pervert isn’t to be blamed at all? Is it fair to ask “Why was she roaming with him at such a time?” It’s a free country; can’t a girl roam at 9 pm in the bloody capital, for crying out loud! To say I was appalled at the lawyer’s comment would be a gross understatement. Nirbhaya was brutally murdered. She had her intestines pulled out! And with what righteousness do you claim that if it was your daughter, you would kill her with your own bare hands? Or burn her alive? The lawyer’s comments make me feel that perhaps the rapists got off too easily. Death by hanging is too quick. Perhaps them, and their lawyer should all have had their intestines pulled out. With a red hot iron rod. And made to suffer for over two weeks. And the lawyer needs his tongue chopped off with a burning knife. We do not need such people in our law structure.
