Last night, I was unpacking my kids’ camp backpacks taking out the soggy bathing suits and lunch boxes. ”Mommy, I didn’t use my towel today,” my son reported. ”Why?” I wanted to know. ”Because the kids would make fun of me for it.” It was a Mickey Mouse towel.
My son loves Mickey Mouse, as he should, because Mickey is cool! I guess, however, for a 6-year-old boy, Mickey Mouse is babyish. Oh, my heart broke just a little bit after this conversation. How could we possibly be past the Mickey years?
That’s the crazy part of this though. My son still really does love Mickey. In fact, my daughter was drawing pictures of the big Mouse for him all evening last night. He loves his Mickey, towel, too….just not in front of his friends. So, the Mickey Mouse towel will be used exclusively for bath time…away from his friends, and I guess we have become closet Mickey supporters.
For some reason, this little Mickey brush off has left me feeling sad. It is the same feeling I had when we put Thomas the Train to rest. Unfortunately, we have graduated to Power Rangers. Blech! Give me Thomas and Mickey any day!
So, I am honoring everyone’s favorite Mouse today with the “Mickey Mouse Club” theme song as my song of the day. I chose the closing show anthem as Jimmy & Annette and the rest of the gang are wishing its viewers a farewell, because it is a melancholy version of the song that is bittersweet and matches my mood. Because we like you!) – M-O-U-S-E!
