Posh, Sporty, Scary, Baby & Ginger
I was quiet smug, knowing that among all the grade schoolers, I was lucky enough to have MTV at home. And thus the endless exposure to 90's pop. And Spice Girls. And make-believing that any day soon I'd become Baby Spice and get the chance to wear those shoes. Not the mini-dress with the hoo-ha neckline but just the shoes, ladies! The shoes! And the pig tails!!!! :) Seriously I shouldn't be using too much of those !!!!!'s.But admit it though, if you were in grade 3, 4 or 5 in 1996, it was quiet difficult not to know them. If you're a girl (or pa-girl!), among the 5 of them I know you could identify with at least one. Posh, Sporty, Scary, Baby or Ginger. No use explaining since their monickers are adjectives or nouns already and are supposed to reflect their most defined characteristics. If you're a boy then I know you've enjoyed watching them in 'Wanna Be' or 'Spice Up Your Life' as much as we did.
The 90's was a very different time and when the Girls came it was like seeing something we've never seen before. And they were just the prelude to the Britneys or the Destiny's Childs of our days. Sing, dance and look hot a the same time.
And, like all goods things must pass, they too split up. First with the departure of Geri 'Ginger' Halliwell. Then with each one of them taking solo careers. And then going into oblivion. Of course every once in while we see Victoria 'Posh' Adams (now Beckham because she married my crush!) whose high profile life became a papparazi commodity. Fast forward to current times and their songs are already included in the 'backtracks section'. Sigh! Time flew us by. But their songs have never lost their charm. No Mother's Day passes by without hearing their song 'Mama'.
And just when our tweeners are busy ogling new British imports (1D anyone?!), we see them five girls kiss and make-up for that performance at the London 2012 Olympics. Another sigh! Good times! :)
