I grew up living with my grandma and grandpa. when i was a kid,my grandma used to narrate me stories,at night. I remember once when i was about 9 or 10(not sure),my grandma was ill,and so my grandpa took his turn for storytelling. He narrated a story about two trees, and the story was quite inspiring. The reason I’m narrating the same story below, after so many years is because now i know what the story was all about. So let me first put up the short story as told by my grandpa…
“Once in a garden there were two trees standing opposite to each other, the first tree was a big tree full of colorful leaves, flowers & tasty fruits, and the other tree was a brown & black, dull dried up tree. The green tree had numerous branches which made the tree lean toward the ground. The green tree used to sway with the wind as if it was a part of it. Whereas the brown tree, had only two branches, which had nothing on them, the tree was not so big and neither it had anything to offer. It stood firm on the ground, the wind had no affect on it,as if he refused to go with the wind. The green tree had many admirers, children who used to play under it’s shed, travellers who used to catch a break under its breeze. The birds made their nests on it. The green tree accepted whatever or whoever came to it. On the other side the brown tree had no one to admire, but it stood on its own pride. One day a heavy storm came, the green tree due to its numerous branches kept rocking with the wind, some of its branches were broken. But the brown tree which was deep-rooted with its own principles, refused to swing with the wind, and at last the heavy wind uprooted the brown tree and it met its end. The green tree survived the storm and was back to everyday business”
Now that was the story. What do you get from it? As a kid i didn’t get much from it,but as i grew up,the picture was getting clear to me. The trees denoted human nature to change with the environment. The green tree is the group of people who tend to adapt themselves according to their needs, the brown tree is the group of people who stick to their principles and pride, till death. Now the question is which tree was right and which was wrong? Off course we should change ourselves according to our needs, but do we need to abolish our deep-rooted principles and self dignity?
