Traditions: Old, Blended and Brand New for 2013

Posted on the 30 December 2012 by Juliejordanscott @juliejordanscot

SocsundaynewI often tell my children the story of my four brothers, my sister and I huddling at the top of the stairs of our house, waiting for our father to plug in the Christmas tree and announce Santa had in fact remembered us and yes, there were presents under the tree.

We would then barrel down the stairs, plop down at our pre-appointed place and start tearing through the gifts.

I always selected my pre-appointed place first because I felt safest by a wall.

We also looked at Christmas lights every Christmas eve, at least until I was fifteen and we left New Jersey where there were numerous people who were exceptionally exuberant with their decorations.

My children now wait until 7 am to venture into the living room. They also insist on the Christmas lights tour on Christmas Eve, though Samuel and I have a second tradition of waiting for the North Pole Christmas tree (a tree in the center of a street) that gets decorated with lights every year by the neighbors who live around it.

DescentI am ready for some brand new traditions for 2013, actually. I am working on my vision/goals/purpose/mission for 2013 and would like to include my children in that discussion, serving as a model for what they may want to do later and also so we may have shared goals to move toward together. Long ago when Katherine was preschool aged I used to do this. I am not entirely sure why I stopped.

Here’s  to old traditions, blended traditions and brand new ones to keep us growing and serving this world where we are blessed to be a part of the human community.
