I was first conscious of this poem’s nagging to be born in August or September. It was dribbling lines and ideas into my mind but I was pretty good at tossing them off until October and OctPoWriMo came along and a prompt basically ripped the cover off the scab and I had to write this to stop the bleeding.
I performed it last night, another moment of what feels like insanity for several reasons.
One, I was only three days post chemo which left my face a remarkably deep shade of red (this doesn’t show too much on the video thankfully!)
Two, more of Emma’s friends were in the audience than I cared to know were there. This both excited me and made me worried but once again, the poem forced me into presence so whether they were there or not simply became - - people are here, listening.
Third, this poem is deeply in the confessional realm. I sometimes complain about people writing self absorbed poetry all about their angst. Well, the poem pulled me out of any of that and off we went.
This is the result… which I haven’t watched yet, actually.
