What I Want to Do/learn

There is something to be said for the uprising of making and purchasing artisan products. Generally you will find these products are better for you, and if you are making them yourself – much more frugal than the counterparts that are made in a lab. In the past year I have developed a curiosity in making more things myself. Mostly out of necessity (we are earning half of what we were earning 2 years ago), but also out of logic. If items are relatively easy to learn, why don’t we make more of them ourselves?

Artisan Bread
As you may know from my Flour Tales blog post, I have started with bread. I really want to dig deeper into this and find make different kinds of bread, especially experimenting with whole grains, and fruits in bread (similar to the breakfast bread found at Publix). For now I am sticking with my original bread until I get a stand mixer. It does take me a while to mix and make the bread – and experimenting a lot right now feels daunting.

Soap Making
I am fascinated with the idea of soap making. I can just picture mixing scents to get just the right blend to intoxicate the senses. I also love the beauty of homemade soap: flecks of something embedded in a dark brown bar, swirls of color in a bar that looks like strawberries and cream ice cream, and so on. If I end up working part time I intend to get into this and my next curiosity right away; living on a tight budget is the only thing that has kept me from doing this.

Candle Making
My curiosity with this craft is similar to that of soap making, it is about making a mixture of the scents and the appearance of the candle. The difference with this and the soap making is I am more inclined to drift away from ‘natural’ elements, and really experiment with the looks of a candle. That said, I still want to play with the scents and make some lovely Mason jar style candles.

Crocheted Blanket by Lucy Toner

Crocheting
I used to crochet, before I met my husband, before I had my daughter. I worked nights at a call center, and I would keep my hands busy in between calls by crocheting. I have drifted away from it over the years and I would love to get back into it. Not for making baby items or sweater so much, but to make blankets. I love crocheted blankets as throws. I suppose eventually I would like to learn to make other items, but I think I need to get sewing down first.

There are plenty of other things I would love to learn to do, or put into my weekly schedule of actually doing, but these are the most pressing things at the moment for me. What new things are you planning to learn to do soon?
