"What more could I do with wild words?”
Mary Oliver
The roots of a giant sequoia make a phenomenal writing table. I want to go back there, to write in the day: to welcome it, to treasure it, to remind the day I am listening and ready to hear its call and respond.
I pause on this morning with the sun shining a bit too brightly on my face at 8:11, thinking, “Do I have to be writing on a root of a 2000 year old tree to have wild words? Can’t I have wild words right where I am, right now, drinking coffee from my Green Apple books mug, looking at the reflected me in this computer screen in my nightgown I still refuse to shed though I’ve been awake for more than two hours?”
I pause again, thinking a run on sentence does not make words wild.
Words are wild upon release.
Words are wild upon release from the gut, the innermost place that both rambles and shoots forth, a laser beam of power. Wild words meander and whisper and roar. They laugh riotously (sometimes at inappropriate moments.) Wild words do not cover their faces when they cry.
Words are wild when they are used for whatever purpose suits that exact writer at that precise moment. There are no rules with wild words. Wild words just are.
They’re flashy and subdued. They’re polite and they’re grumpy and they trample freshly bloomed flowers.
Wild words are passionate about being wild.
We do not own them, they own us in the very best sense.
I wonder, what more could we all do with wild words?
