When Your Friend Is Fired

Posted on the 13 April 2013 by Missliabilities
Two days left before the end of tax season 2013 and someone got fired. She and I were becoming close, we both had plans to change the old processes of our firm and make it better, we were planning a double date to a museum, and she had just bought a house and was planning on having a wine night very soon.
I doubt it will happen now.
I was stuffing my face with a bagel when I got in the office at 9:30 this morning, late as usual on Saturday. She was carrying a big box and I jokingly asked if she'd quit. "I was fired." She replied so matter of fact I couldn't believe it. Apparently even though she did a good job and put in the long hours, she was bad for company morale.
I was shaking so bad when I got in. My manager came over to ask me a question on some tax returns and I couldn't think straight. "I don't want to get fired." I told her. Despite all my bitching and moaning, I was very slowly warming up to the job.
Later, my boss asked me to come into his office. I was terrified. He didn't fire me though. He went through the reasons he had fired my friend and it all made sense. She would leave at 6 on weeknights when the rest of us were there till 9. She didn't talk to anyone except me. She skipped a couple Saturdays. She walked around like she knew it all though she had less experience than most of us. She felt entitled from the moment she entered the small firm because she'd come from a top accounting firm.
I have never been fired. I didn't get offered a job as an intern but that's not the same. She was so cold to me as I tried to give her a hug. Like I was the one who got her fired.
Very sad. 2 days.
