The violent and senseless tragedy that occurred at a Jerusalem synagogue this week, and the ill reporting from CNN, has left the world reeling. They are both unfathomable acts, and really, there’s not too much to say about either one of them except to acknowledge how awful they both were.
From my end, there is only one thing I can do…stand loud and proud for Israel and show my support.
This past semester, I went back to school as a graduate student seeking a Masters degree in Jewish Education, and I’m so proud to be affiliated with Hebrew College, such a fine institution that instills great learning and values to all who take part in it.
Today, one of my professors shared a haunting beautifully version of “Yerushalyim Shel Zahav” from the school chamber chorus. The Hebrew words translate as “Jerusalem of Gold,” and its prolific timbre stirs up these heinous acts of the past week and reminds us that Israel is our homeland.
Recently, I have had a few non-Jewish friends either visit Israel or make plans to visit Israel. The timing of their travel has really touched something deep in me. It is a reminder that Israel means so many things to so many people, and people travel to it far and wide to bask in its holiness regardless of their faith.
Violence and Israel simply should not exist, but they do. So today, I stand in support of Israel not just for my people…but for all people.
