You Learn, #1216

One of the greatest misconceptions ever is that when you finally finish college after years of education that your learning is complete.  It is so untrue, and one thing I really love about my job is that not only am I constantly teaching, but I am also constantly provided with opportunities for learning.  It’s funny that I would even write this, because anyone who knew me in my youth would quickly remember that I was never a traditional student.

I was never one for memorizing text books and certainly would epically fail at anything even remotely mathematical.  It’s strange how maturity can give you an unquenchable thirst for more and more learning.  Who would have ever thought that on my own I would seek out a masters degree program in my 40’s?

Well it happened, and I even already have one year under my belt.  School starts back up for me in 1 week, and I welcome the challenge.  Sure, it’s a lot of work, but intellectually and spiritually, it is a great opportunity.  It is great to have adult conversations in a profound way, and it is great to do so under the umbrella of academia.

So….perhaps there is one more brainless romance novel I can squeeze in without frying too many brain cells before the semester starts, and then….full force forward!

Alanis Morissette wrote an excellent song in the 90’s for adult learning.  I’m not sure that 20-something Alanis wrote the song with that intention, but “You Learn” is just right for any type of student….traditional or not.
