"You've Won the Lottery!" and Other April Moon Nuances

Posted on the 21 April 2014 by Juliejordanscott @juliejordanscot

April MoonThis blog post was inspired by a prompt from my friend, Kat McNally, who is hosting April Moon 2014.

I wrote it in a five minute meandering stint of word-love on a fun theme. I hope to write more of these reflective writing pieces - and hope, perhaps, you will join the writing pleasure.

Find out all about April Moon here.

NUANCE

Pre-S: this was written stream-of-consciousness style. I apologize ahead of time for grammatical, stylistic and "wow, this makes no sense at all!" errors in advance.

The Blue Jay Sings: You've Wone the Lottery! and other April Moon Nuances I managed to click a photo of my friend in waiting & discovery

Nuance:

Subtle and almost unnoticeable unless one is quietly discerning,

Like mid-week, when I had a massage appointment and not only listened to the birds talking to each other, I also sat as nearly still as possible so they would show me their faces and their bodies so I could get to know them just the tiniest bit better.

I watched the Blue Jay, the lowly scrub, squawking up a storm, trying to get her words heard. I noticed after a time how narrow the opening to her mouth was as she rang out her concerns to the other birds (and watchers, like me) in the neighborhood. The sound seemed to come from deep in her belly. This loudness seemed to use very ounce of her energy.

Her squawking seemed to deplete her stores when she was overpowered by the unlikely silent fast wings of a traveling hummingbird.

“Squaw ---- oooops! Out of here!” she seemed to say as they flew near the same branch of the oak tree, hanging her arms out as an upside down cradle. I laughed loudly to myself and the birds from my perch on the front porch of the Queen Anne home.

It was a nuance, I suppose, not only to enjoy getting to revere the song of the Jay, but also to allow myself to experience this waiting not as a chore but as a spiritual practice.

It is subtle and yet enormous when we make the choice to sit with the time of waiting.

We transform the “not yet?!” with the “here I am!” and it is suddenly like hitting the attitude lottery only we are not only the winner of the lottery, we are the one who chooses the winner.

There you have a not so subtle nuance.

Nuance: polka dots and stripes, layered socks, a sweet little girls legs half a world away.

Nuance: five minutes of writing, a quick slice of creativity cut out of my Easter evening as Samuel, Emma and I sit creating separately together. Beth the dog is here, too, the only sound in the room the fan whirring from side to side and a far off dog barking.

Nuance in wonderfulness.

We’ll take it.
