A.L. Davroe (A stands for Amanda) writes both YA and adult speculative fiction. She prefers revisionist tales in paranormal, romance, Steampunk, and fantasy. She is the author of Salvation Station (adult psych horror), The City Steam Collection (adult A.L. Davroe horror), For Your Heart (YA Paranormal Romance) and her YA Sci-Fi novel, Nexis, is came out with Entangled Publishing December 1, 2015!
By day, Amanda lives in Connecticut with her two feline hench-creatures and makes cheese. She’s a terrible blusher, has a weak spot for cuddly animals, loves Laffy Taffy and Cadbury MiniEggs, and she’s a huge advocate of alternative healing methods. Amanda also wears purple shoes and corsets…Though not always in the same ensemble. She’s a Capricorn, a Hufflepuff, a bit gothic, and a few nuggets short of a Happy Meal.

About your education?
I have a degree in English and a degree in Anthropology
What career did you plan during your education days?
I guess I thought I would go on to grad school and become an Anthropologist.
What languages you can speak and write?
English and sarcasm. XD A little French.
What is your biggest source of inspiration in life?
What hurts you most in this world?
When people hurt the ones closest to them.
What is your favorite genre and why?
I really love fantasy because in fantasy you can completely unhinge from reality. The laws of nature and science no longer apply, so anything can happen. The characters can be anything from anywhere and have any skill the writer pleases.
When did you start writing? What is the purpose of your writing?
I started writing as a hobby in high school. I suppose it was, and is still, a form of entertainment and escape for my mind.
What genres you write in and why?
Science fiction, fantasy, paranormal romance, and horror. I just can’t deal with real world stuff, I guess…LOL
What keeps you motivating towards writing?
So long as there is something inside my head that needs to get out then I have all the motivation I need.
How do you plan, schedule and monitor your writing commitments?
Is it awful to admit that I don’t? My muse doesn’t like schedules and restrictions, so I write what and when the mood strikes.
What is generally your preference in reading – a paper book or ebook? And why?
I have been and always will be in the physical book department. There’s something magical about the structure of a book alone, something that an ebook just doesn’t have.
A.L. Davroe on imagination
Is a high level of imagination important to have for an Author?
I think that is dependant on what you’re writing. For non-fiction, probably not as much. For fiction, you need at least enough imagination to make up characters, interactions, and a fake story. You need to be able to imagine someone else’s thoughts and feelings. If you focus on certain types of genre fiction, then most certainly you’ll need a whole lot more imagination. Fantasy and science fiction, for example, require a huge amount of imagination to build new worlds.
Your dream destination on Earth?
I’ve never been to Disney and I really want to go. I also would like to visit Japan before I die.
Your origin of birth and other countries you have visited/ stayed. What best things you liked in these countries around the globe?
I was born in the United States. I’ve been to Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Monaco, France, Australia, and New Zealand. I’m a huge fan of plant and animal life, so obviously I love to look at how the natural world differs from my own in each of these places. New Zealand has had the most appealing and exotic to me, so far. I also love architecture and I think that Monaco took the cake on that one. It has the most packed into such a little place.

Favorite time of the day?
I love the wee hours of the morning, right when the sun is shining and the birds are singing and it’s so quiet and peaceful.
Your zodiac/ sun sign?
I’m a Capricorn on the cusp of Sagittarius. And I definitely suit it!
Your favorite color and why?
I gravitate toward dark jewel tones in general, but my favorite is purple. In fact, it just makes me happy to look at.
What is the last book you finished reading? What is the current book you are reading?
I just finished reading The Scarecrow King and now I’m reading a couple of different things. Also, I’m co-reading Thorn and After Alice with a friend of mine. And in addition, I’m listening to an audiobook of Brave New World.
Your favorite movie and why?
I don’t have an absolute favorite. But I do love many of the movies produced by Hayao Miyazaki! As a matter of fact, I think I really enjoy the strong characters who grow as well as the beautiful art, detail, and imagination that go into each of his pieces. In fact, I also enjoy pieces by Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro.
A.L. Davroe on favorite celebrity
Your favorite celebrity and why?
I don’t really go for celebrity worship. But I guess I enjoy Johnny Depp, Leonardo DeCaprio, Cate Blanchette, and Sandra Bullock. In fact, I tend to gravitate and enjoy movies that they are in. Moreover, I believe I like them because they seem more confident and secure in their talent and personage whereas many celebrities are more obviously concerned about image.
Your favorite sports?
I don’t play sports, really. Unless you count long walks, which is pretty much my fitness strategy.
What comes to your mind when you think of India?
I think of the first book I read that featured India. A Little Princess. In fact, I actually think it’s a good book to have that first introduction to India. It does paint India as an exotic, colorful place – which I think is a pretty normal motif, but Sarah also paints it as a place of rich history, culture, and lore. She respects and loves India and its people, whereas many pieces from the colonial time period don’t do it that justice.
