A Closer Look at Female Hair Loss

We invited Anouska, from Hair Ink, to have a chat about the common causes of hairloss, the various types of hairloss and how they can be treated!

According to studies, we all lose around one hundred hairs per day which, although sounds like a lot, isn’t that many when you consider you have 100,000-150,000 hairs on there anyway.

That one hundred hair-loss can increase depending on a few factors. There’s something called Telogen Effluvium which is classed as general to moderate shedding and you might find that the female hair loss is increased with hormonal levels going up and down, illness, stress, medication and more.

On top of this type of female hair loss, there are over fifty different disorders than can affect both men and women and the hair on their heads. There’s the fairly well-known Alopecia Areata which is classified by clumps of hair loss and baldness to show visible patches. Generally this is something that kids and young adults will get but it has been shown to affect slightly older females too. The 30-something year old British TV and radio presenter Gail Porter was slightly older when she first found her hair falling out.

For the most part, general hair loss is something that won’t be treated at the doctors. This is something that can and probably will happen with age, and although is unpleasant, isn’t really posing a threat to your health. Well, aside from a knock to the self-esteem anyway.

There are a couple of drugs that have been shown to have a positive effect on female hair loss but they are generally not available to everyone on the NHS and can prove rather costly over time. Again, there is another downfall; these drugs will only have an effect for as long as you continue to take them. If you stop taking the medication, your hair loss problem will return.
