Food, Glorious Food *Summer Favourites Edition*

Posted on the 10 September 2013 by Larlarcharms
Throughout Summer I have tried lots of different foods and drinks. I decided to keep a mental note of my favourites and turn it into a blog post – so here goes:

White’s Toasted Oats inWild Fruit Crunch. I picked these up in ASDA when they were on offer for £2. They have since gone back up to £2.65 but you can still find them in Sainsburys for £2.45.

I’ve tried dried fruit in cereal before and found the taste horrifically acidic with a nasty texture. So it came as a plesant surprise that the dried fruit in the Toasted Oats is very easy on the taste buds. Overall this cereal is quite sweet, but the mixture of oats and flakes keeps the cereal varied. I also eat them with  natural yoghurt  which is really yummy. If they stayed on offer for longer I would keep buying them!

These were a one-off find at my local B & M’s. That’s the problem with the abudance of these cheap shops, as soon as you get a liking for something the product disappears off the face of the earth and leaves you with an unfulfilled craving. Nevertheless, I picked up these instant banana porridges at the very reasonable price of 29p each. The cooking instructions are very easy to follow – just pour hot water up to the line, stir like crazy and wait five minutes for the porridge to thicken up. Done. I usually go for plain or original porridge so I was a little sceptical about the added flavourings. I needn’t of worried, the banana flavor was sweet and very nice. As soon as I peeled back the foil lid I was met with a lovely banana-ry aroma! Typically, B & M swiftly stopped stocking them so now I will just have to reminisce about it.

There is also a red version of this which has no extra flavourings. I decided to try it in an attempt to re-live  the banana flavoured version. Uh huh, how wrong could I have been? Guys, DO NOT GET TRICKED INTO BUYING THE RED VERSION! Everything started off well, the smell emitting from the porridge was also very pleasant. However, that’s where all the goodness ended. When I took a spoonful of the gloopy mixture, I was met with what I can only describe as a metally taste that WAS DEFINITELY NOT RIGHT. It tasted so wrong like there may have been a mix up at the factory. Ugh, that flavor will continue to haunt me, even now I can taste it! Let’s move on quickly shall we?

£2.05 for 4 35g bars. I like to break it down to around 50p per day which sounds much more student-budget friendly. A lot of people will say these are their guilty little secret even though they are ‘good for you’. Eat Natural bars in apricot appear to be healthy you say? Look the box even says so: gluten free, no added nasties and every ingredient is natural blah blah. Well check out the top three ingredients on the list and you are met with sugar, oil and yoghurt.. Not so healthy now are they? This doesn’t stop me eating them though because they taste so good. The combination of soild yoghurt with the crunchy almonds, tiny snippets of sugary fruit and coconut pieces is to die for. I was given my first full sized bar at a freshers fair and have been hooked ever since. Plus you can’t feel guilty about eating the 35g snack bar versions.

I was hovering around the special dietary/ gluten free and what-not area of a supermarket. I don’t have any special requirements/ hindrances with my diet but this happened to be where the Eat Natural bars were stocked. My eyes were quickly drawn to these 9 Bar snacks with pumpkin seeds. They cost £1.99 for four 40g bars.

I remember the first bar tasting sweet, but more wholesome and less artifical than the Eat Natural bar. This is defiantly more healthy and the pumpkin seeds are good for you. However, my ‘all of or nothing’ attitude made me swiftly go out and buy another two boxes of the stuff. Needless to say a month down the line and I still have these in my cupboard. The problem is I never find myself craving pumpkin seeds and almost have to force myself to eat one.

If you have flicked through my small blog you may recognize this photo from my Amsterdam entry. The hotel I stayed at kindly provided four different types of tea in the room: Lemon, Full Breakfast, Earl Yuck and Camomile. I decided to try to latter option which did not disappoint. I happily got into the routine of having at least one cup of camomile a day and greedily asked for more at the reception desk. To be fair to the staff instead of telling me buy my own they gave me a large handful of tea bags. By the end of the trip I had enough camomile tea to last me a good couple of weeks at home.

Okay I’m being abit sly here, I have been buying green tea soft drinks for a couple of years at my local Chinese shop so these are not just my summer favourites! The ingredient list (a sticker slapped over the Cantonese bottle) states that there is a whopping 0.05% green tea in each bottle. How much?? They still taste good though!
