Ganeshotsav this year witnesses a new paradigm this year in Mumbai. While until last year it was everybody celebrating the event. But this year, a faction of youth, though too small in comparison, came forward for an incredible initiative. A group of 50 students belonging to the Eco Club of ITM Group of Institution decided to launch a clean beach drive in parallel. The institution is working on a serious cause of Cleaner and Greener Mumbai now for last many years. Hence, students from this institutions came forward to join hands with BMC officials for a beach clean-up drive.As a matter of fact, it is happening for the past three years. The members of this institution’s Eco Club are conducting clean beach drive for the past three years.
This year, members of this Eco Club covered 800 meters stretch at Dadad Shivaji Park on the occasion of Ganeshotsav. It was not a simple task at all. The students had to collect around 2500 Kg waste. And for this drive there were some volunteers and teaching staff offering their services. The students had to equip themselves with brooms, gloves, and, masks on a Sunday morning. When everyone else was relaxing at home. It is interesting to know that within a short span of three hours, there was a waste collection of more than 100 bags from the beach. BMC staff was there to assist the students in this activity and the cause by providing dumper truck.
Ganeshotsav Celebrations Bring A Lot of Concerns
Prof Prachi, HOD Marketing & Head of ITM Eco Club says, “Shivaji Park area is considered as one of the dirtiest places in Mumbai post Ganesh Visarjan (Ganeshotsav). ITM Kharghar’s Eco Club students have been conducting the clean-up drive here every year. With an objective to spread awareness and sensitise the onlookers towards environment protection by right practices. I would like to congratulate and thank all our students for contributing towards the same. Further, ITM Group of Institution would like to acknowledge BMC and other government authorities for letting us contribute and participate in the clean-up drive movement.”
Rituraj, member & current year President of Eco Club says, “It is important to keep in mind our responsibility towards mother earth. We students undertake this activity every year in order to give back to the mother nature. And influence others to follow the same.”
Prof Roopam, faculty coordinator of ITM Eco Club adds, “Ganeshotsav is a wonderful festival. It brings in a lot of happiness around. As a citizen of Mumbai, every year, people come in large numbers for immersions. But people fail to collect the leftovers of flowers, decorations, plastic, etc. Through this activity, our aim is to spread awareness about clean and green environment.”
