Choosing a novelty gift for a loved one, friend or co-worker is a great option for injecting fun and humor into the holiday. However, if you don’t quite get it right, you risk a very awkward situation. It’s important to shop around to find the perfect gift for your recipient, which can sometimes be difficult if you’re participating in secret Santa! Sites like http://www.gettingpersonal.co.uk/christmas-gifts/secret-santa are good for secret Santa gift ideas in particular, but no matter who you’re purchasing your novelty gift for, there are a few useful things to remember.
Guest Post: The Dos and Don’ts of the Novelty Christmas Gift

Do think outside the box

Sure most people love chocolate, but a boring box from your local garage is about as exciting as...well, a box of chocolates from your local garage. If your imagination is slightly lacking, take a unique twist on the classics. If you’re set on a chocolate gift, look into personalised chocolate bars, and other novelty chocolate items such as chocolate pizzas, or even chocolate beauty products.

Don’t get too carried away

If you’re on the hunt for something different, it can be easy to get a bit carried away. Try to reign yourself back in and truly think about the receiver of your gift. Will they really appreciate an inflatable sheep, or is it better to stick to something a little more familiar; perhaps a mug with a sheep on it? Particularly if you don’t know the recipient too well – if you’re new to the office, for example – stick to something safe.

Do go for the humor element

If you know the person’s sense of humor well, pay homage to it in the gift. That’s the beauty of novelty gifts; it’s a chance to have some fun and make your friends and family laugh. If you’re after a gift for a co-worker, something funny for the office is a good bet, like character stress balls, comical mugs, word of the day calendars or diaries with an amusing personalised photo or phrase. Choosing a novelty gift for a partner can be good fun, especially when choosing something to spice up things in the bedroom!

Don’t leave it till the last minute

Choosing a novelty gift can be difficult. Choosing a novelty gift under pressure can be ten times more difficult. Take the time to shop around, as you’ll soon find something that’s perfect for your recipient. But don’t stress about it too much – the idea of a novelty gift is that it’s supposed to be fun, so don’t take it too seriously. As long as you’ve got something that suits the person’s sense of humour, it’s sure to be a success.

Do get creative

If you’re budget isn’t very high, now’s the time to get imaginative. You can instantly turn your small gift into a pleasing novelty gift by how you present it. For example, when selecting nail varnish to give as your gift, decorate a piece of card with the phrase ‘For Your Mistletoes’ on it, and put it in a gift box. You could also give novelty Christmas lip balm, and include mistletoe in the gift bag, with a card saying ‘Christmas Kisses’. If you’re buying for a man, go for a bottle of world beer, and stick some googly eyes and a red pom pom on for a nose, then bend brown pipe cleaners into the shape of antlers, and voila! A beer Rudolph!
