Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer | Hit Or Hype?

Posted on the 18 May 2014 by Genzelkisses

The first time I knew about primers was in college. I applied foundation then after less than an hour, it oxidized and made my skin dark. Since then, I started to use primer and still on a hunt for best primer for my skin. I have combination to oily skin which means, my T-zone gets oily while the rest of my skin tends to be normal – dry.

When I heard about this said to be “the best primer ever”, my butt went crazy to get my hands on it. However, it’s that expensive! Good thing I saw these deluxe samples for sale and bought them (I posted the photos over to my Instagram @genzelkisses). I would love to try it first before buying the full-size. This review has been in my drafts folder for more than a week. To my friend Janet of Journey on Beauty, here’s your request! Sorry to keep you waiting ^_^ Let’s see if it’s really a hit or just one of those hyped products (well for me at least).

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 (deluxe sample)

Aside from this sample size, it comes in 3 sizes in Sephora. 0.33 oz ($18), 1 oz ($52), and 2 oz ($72) respectively.

Since this is just a sample size, I got some of its information from Sephora.

What it is:
A mineral-based, water-resistant primer with SPF 15 that neutralizes the skin, minimizes shine, and creates a smooth, uniform canvas for flawless makeup application.

What it does:
This clean, satin-finish formula helps keep makeup looking fresh and prevents fading. Veil Mineral Primer also absorbs excess oils and minimizes the appearance of pores by evenly distributing light to help hide and soften skin imperfections and fine lines.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Phthalates

What else you need to know:
Veil Mineral Primer is formulated with naturally derived titanium dioxide and zinc oxide instead of chemical sun-blocking agents. This water-resistant primer is also 100 percent free of fragrance, oil, and gluten.

Ingredients:

Titanium Dioxide (2.45%): Reflects UVA/UVB rays to protect skin from harmful damage and are an alternative to chemical-based sunscreen agents.
-Zinc Oxide (4.20%): Provides anti-inflammatory properties and offers full spectrum coverage by absorbing UVA and UVB rays at the skin’s surface.

Cyclopentasiloxane, Isododecane, Polysilicone-11, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Hexyl Laurate, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isosterate, Stearic Acid, Alumina.

My deluxe sample bottle comes with a spatula to get the product. I use my clean fingertips to apply it on my face especially my T-zone area where I get oily and makeup tends to fade the most. It has Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide to protect the skin from UVA and UVB. I have seen these ingredients in some of my mineral makeups and I don’t have issue with it yet until…

As you see on the swatch above, it’s literally white but blends well on the skin. It feels very light and like moisturizer. My skin feels so soft, smooth, and velvety and very much ready for makeup application. This is a silicone based product by the way so if you have any issues with this ingredient, this is an early warning.

I have put this product in a number of tests to see if it really works. Here, I used my The Face Shop Angel Skin Foundation on top of the primer. It’s a nice foundation but I need to see if the primer will prolong its stay on my face.

I love the fact that it makes my skin so smooth for makeup application but there are issues that started to arise when I use the primer.

Dry patches on my face here and there

Not so good in making my pores less visible

Doesn’t control oil esp. on my T-zone

Not as water-resistant as it promised (it’s summer!)

Gives white cast on photos esp. on flash photography

I was shocked to see these dry patches on my face because it rarely happens to me plus my skin feels so smooth and these are not really expected. Did I moisturize my skin prior to makeup application? YES, very.

You will also notice that my face is whiter compared to my neck. I applied foundation on my neck but not primer. The above photo was taken indoor, no flash. Oh my, what more if I had the flash on. HORROR!

I have tried this primer outdoor, indoors, and in an air-conditioned room, but still disappoint. I was telling myself, oh maybe it’s just me then? But NO. I read a few mini reviews in sephora and there are people who experienced it too.

On a brighter side, I noticed my blush and and eye makeup stays on for hours, BUT my blushes used are Maybelline Cheeky Glow and Ellana Pressed Blush Duo that are long-lasting on their own. For the eyes, I used my Urban Decay Glenda and Basics palettes.

On here, I used my all-time favorite Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation on top of the primer BUT I still get oily that fast compared to if I’m using a different primer like Benefit Poreless Porefessional and Ellana Mineral Primer.

I have given this a lot of chances to justify the image attached to it as the best primer but unfortunately, it’s not the case for me.

REVIEW SUMMARY

LOVE

♥  Nice frosted bottle and packaging.

♥  Makes my skin so smooth and ready for makeup

♥  No irritation or breakouts (I sleep with my makeup on to test it out if I will breakout the next morning – my skin is just like that)

♥  Good for videos like HD makeup

CONCERN

✿  High-end, therefore expensive but for me it’s not worth the splurge

✿  Only available online

✿  Doesn’t control oil as I expected it to be

✿  Not water-resistant as promised

✿  Gives white cast on photographs (with or without flash)

TIP/s and RECOMMENDATION

☑  If you have combination to oily skin, well I don’t recommend this for you.  There are other primers that’s cheaper and work better than this.

☑  Based on my little research, people with combination to dry or normal skin loves this primer.

REPURCHASE?

NO.

OVERALL
2kisses

I rarely give this score because most of the products I used work on me but this product, I gave it a lot of chances hoping that I will love it too and purchase the full-size but my journey with this ends here. BUT, I’m not saying that this won’t work on you too.  It still depends on your skin-type, condition, and preference. I have seen a lot of people love this primer, I am just not one of them.

WHERE TO BUY?

I bought mine from KikayStuffPH on Instagram but you can also buy this directly from Hourglass website and Sephora.

What are your thoughts with this primer? Have you tried it?
