Cholesterol is a form of lipid, that is, fat. It is widespread throughout the body and especially in nerve tissue. This fat is present in animals but not in plants. It is important for development of cell membranes and production of several basic hormones such as adrenalin, estrogen and testosterone. It has been discovered that 66 % of cholesterol is created through synthesis within the body while the rest is introduced through diet. Having in mind that the body is able to create large amounts of this substance, we only need limited amount of it through regular diet. Unfortunately, some people have excess of cholesterol which can lead to severe diseases.

Cholesterol travels through blood stream to its final destination – cells. It binds to proteins and builds lipoproteins. Depending on thickness, these proteins can be divided into LDL or low density lipoproteins (otherwise known as bad cholesterol) and HDL or high density lipoproteins (known as good cholesterol). The main problem happens when there is too much LDL in comparison to HDL. In this situation, low density lipoproteins start building up within the blood stream, leading to clogged arteries. In this situation, blood is no longer able to travel normally meaning that heart and brain cannot receive adequate supply of blood and with it, all other necessary substances that are important for survival of these organs.

This condition is otherwise known as atherosclerosis. Clots that are formed within the blood stream are not only disabling flow of blood; they are also reducing natural elasticity of the arteries. All of this can lead to stroke and heart attack. Main risk factors that can lead to formation of clots and by that, development of atherosclerosis are increased pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, consuming soft water instead of hard water.
