Information Protection...

Posted on the 27 June 2012 by Felicakes @felicakes

I bet most of you do not know that I have a Bachelors Degree in Communications and IT. :D Yes. I went to Uni to STUDY Communications and Information Technology. How did I ended up being a professional PA (Personal Assistant)? I am not sure really. I just happened to stumble upon it. I have to say though, I love being a PA.

So anyway, back to Communications and IT. This degree helped me with my job though. I seem to be the go to person at work if something breaks down. Though, I may be a little rusty on the latest softwares, one thing that I am always up to date with is with my anti virus software. I know there are a lot of anti virus software out there like this Antivirus Software, which I personally use since my family had our first computer at home, but there are some free ones out there. A word of caution though, the saying "you get what you paid for" applies here. I have used some free ones out there and your computer is not 100% protected. Usually they need you to "UPGRADE" or etc.

Why should you protect your computer? Like you, I use my laptop for everything. Emails, Facebook, twitter, pinterest, blogging and most importantly shopping and banking. It's the BANKING AND SHOPPING part that you need to be worried about. Why? One word. MONEY. Yes we all hate to lose our money. I have been a victim before and I have to say, as a poor student, I needed every single cent that I was sent or earned and I learnt a lesson on antivirus that day. This is something you do not learn at University. This is something you learn in life itself.

So my tips on picking the right antivirus software for you?

  1. Know your system. What system do you use? Are you a windows user? Are you an Apple computer user? Though I know that most viruses are designed for the Windows operating system, that doesn't mean that as an Apple computer user, you are not vulnerable to attacks.
  2. Use of your computer. What do you mainly use your computer for? Are you a gamer? Do you use it for work (usually confidential documents) or do you mainly use the computer for surfing the internet?
  3. Go on to forums. Find out what people are saying about the specific antivirus you are looking to use. Go on to the brand's forum or go on to a computer forum. When I do my research, I usually go to the brand's forum to find out what the complaints are and go on to another forum, which is not connected to the brand, to see what people are praising about the software.
  4. Regular updates. Ensure that the antivirus software updates regularly. Things happens really fast in the Internet these days so make sure your antivirus is always up to date. You can set it to update everytime they release a new pack or you can do it manually. I usually set and forget. There are some softwares out there that is constantly updating itself to the point of annoying, so this is also something you have to keep in mind.
  5. Running at the background. When I was studying, softwares usually requires us to click on it to run a scan. Now, you can set it to run on at the background so that it can immediately detect something as soon as it comes in.

Please be mindful that these tips are my own personal opinion. I am not in anyway an expert but I am just sharing my personal experiences.

Do you have a tip on how to protect yourself from the malware on the internet?
