MaryPebbles Says Ramadan Kareem

Posted on the 28 June 2014 by Mary Ughojor @marypebbles1

So, #Ramadan is here once again and while the Muslims engage in strict fasting and prayers, I am here munching on a doughnut my dad got from across the street. Hehe!According to Wikipedia, my beloved and true friend, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in which Muslims all over the world fast from dawn until sunset. During this period, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations; in some interpretations they also refrain from swearing. It is a sacred period where Muslims empathize with those in need, engage in extra prayers and worship in order to get closer to God.
Enough said, but I got say, back then in boarding school, I use to envy the Muslims during the Ramadan period for a lot of reasons·   They were exempted from hostel and school work portions, thereby accumulating more work for the rest of us.·   When they break school rules, they were rarely punished.·   You don’t see them in the dining hall ·   They were given foodstuff to cook for themselves (how about that? In a boarding school? It was luxury in its peak)·   They were allowed some contraband like sardines, noodles, stove, canned drinks etc.·   They were rarely sent on errands by the ‘seniors’
Getting this kind of boarding school luxury would make any student green with envy, so don’t judge ok? Thanks!Aside being envious, I also admired them. I mean c’mon, even with the meager 3-square meal, I was always hungry all the time, and then you want me to fast for almost a month? Haha! Who are you trying to kill? Not that I don’t fast, I do. I guess 12am to 3pm for a day or two is enough for me. The last time I decided to join The Redeem Church in their 100 day fasting, I got really ill, so thank you, I will stick to what I can do.I guess they (Muslims) are used to it already.
MaryPebbles Says Ramadan KareemI want to say Ramadan Kareem to my Muslims friends (Aisha, Saffiyyah, Kabiru, Abdul) and Muslims worldwide. It is my prayer that as you celebrate this period, you shall yield abundant spiritual enlightenment, reward and Allah’s continual blessings.P.S Sallah is by the corner, I know it won’t take anything from you to pass along some sallah meat. I will be expecting some. Please do have a nice and peaceful Ramadan!
