Let every Indian promise to the nation for three things today on the occassion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 68th birthday. It is the second biggest dam in the world. First being the Grand Coulee dam that is on the Columbia river in Washington, USA. Hence it automatically becomes the biggest dam of our nation. It is always good to see the things happening for the benefit of country that were pending and lingering on for years so far.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is basically for the benefit of lakhs of farmers. In turn, it wil definitely help increasing Gujarat’s agriculture income. Because the increase in production by more than 200 per cent, as the Chief Minister Vijay Rupani claims, will do that. There was an earlier effort in 1996 to build this dam. But then it got a stay in its construction from the Supreme Court. That was on the basis of a nationwide social movement, the Narmada Bachao Andolan. The stay over its construction was over environmental and rehabilitation issues. And probably the political power at that time had more interest in creating drama over the issue. Rather than resolving it. You need a good amount of courage and will power to do all this.
Sardar Sarovar Dam Is A Birthday Gift
The court allowing the construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam to resume in October 2000 could see no action. There was a leap of 17 more years to see it happening again. 4.73 million acre-feet of water at maximum will be the usable storage of this dam. This iafter raising its height to around 139 metres.
