I woke up at 12 noon today to the scorching heat of summer.The power went off at 6 am since the whole city was scheduled for a 12-hour blackout.I slept through the first six hours and felt a bit relieved when I realized there were only six hours left with no electricity.I anticipated a boring afternoon, nonetheless, with me continuously fanning myself to ward off the discomfort brought about by a 33 degree Celsius weather.And then the agony of the absence of an internet connection crept in.
The net has always been a crucial part of my day.And my daily routine wouldn’t be complete without me checking my email, opening facebook, tweeting, reading my favorite blogs, and exploring pinterest for design inspiration.So can you imagine the torture of someone whose life entirely depended on social media had to go through? HeheI was eventually left with no other choice but to look for an activity not internet-related that could possibly kill time…And break my impending impatience of the idleness that was apparently about to ruin my productivity.
So I helped myself by rummaging through the pile of Reader’s Digest laying on the Monobloc chair outside my bedroom.I pulled out one old issue from the pile and started flipping through its pages as I sat on the rocking chair that stood at the hallway.Soon enough, I found myself engrossed with inspiring true-to-life stories of survival.I finished reading two articles and a few minutes later, I found myself in the mood for writing my own story for the day – the one that I intended to post on this little blog.So I took out my notebook for my handwritten (and later on, computerized) documentation of today’s events.
And then I began to wonder, How were people before electricity was invented able to survive the heat without the electric fan or air conditioner?I was also amazed by the fact that climbing trees and playing hide and seek were enough to alleviate the kids’ boredom before the advent of the internet and online games.Life was so simple back then.And they didn’t need any technological gadgets to have a good time.Those were the good old days when the world seemed to be enough in order for man to live.
Hmmm, they made sense…
And oh, I survived the blackout. :-D
