The first time I "worked an event," I was in my mid-20's and had two fashion buttons: casual/young or mature/career. Imagine Working Girl meets Valley Girl. Cute, but not professional. Definitely not what the PR-fashion-powers-that-be ordered.
Those powers, being held by my Southern-bred boss, who happened to be a former Bijan employee, announced in a very loud and clear voice, that I was to "only wear black" at any events I would be working at.
He also sprinkled a fact here-and-there about his (previous) career at Fred Hayman, and a long-line of "fashionable" coworkers...all of which wore, of course, "fashionable" clothes in a single color: Black.
He didn't have to tell me more than a couple of times before I got the hint: A professional PR wardrobe is based on key, well-made fashion pieces, that are always in black.
