Since our wedding proceeded Christmas this year, we received a lot of wedding related gifts.
One of the coolest ones has to be the anniversary journal, pictured above, we received from my aunts.
Inside the journal is a page to commemorate every year of your marriage. It’s a wonderful way to center your marriage every year and preserve memories for you and your posterity.
We had initially intended to bring our journal on our one year anniversary trip to Charlottesville, but in true Adams fashion we forgot it. (We literally forget at least one important thing on every overnight trip—most recently I forgot makeup when we were attending a wedding the next day. Thank goodness for similarly colored Moms. But I digress).
So instead of just filling out the journal in our boring apartment, I thought we should venture out to one of our local waterside parks.
Luckily, we managed to pick a gorgeous day. The sun was shining, without a chance of rain in sight.
So we plopped ourselves down onto a blanket and started completing our 1 year entry.
Mr. A took ownership of the pen, since I have the world’s most notoriously awful handwriting, while I documented his progress and made fun of his cursive writing.
The journal asked us to recount our favorite day together. We had a hard time picking with so many amazing vacations last year between our honeymoon and our Caribbean cruise.
We ended up settling on our day in Rome and our time at Valley Church Beach in Antigua.
The next question we both thought was pretty random—what was your favorite movie, song, and book?
We had a hard time even remembering what movies we watched this year so we just went with TV shows—Dexter, True Blood, etc.
Songs were pretty random too but mainly followed a Dave Barnes theme.
Books we just totally ignored. I couldn’t tell you the last time we read a book for fun. It’s an awful thing to admit. But after grad school, I just had to take a break from reading. I think two years later it’s time for me to pick it back up again. Any suggestions? (Because otherwise I’ll just read about babies and infertility and freak myself out).
The last part of the journal was really sweet. It was a section where we could write a little note to each other.
I can’t wait to see how the notes unfold over the years. Let’s just hope I find something new and original to say for the next 60 years.
When we finished writing our notes, we finally let the other person read their note—definitely brought a smile to my face.
With that, we had finished our 1 year journal entry.
It makes my heart happy to know that our kids will be able to see (in a succinct portable format) our relationship grow and change over the years. Now all we have to do is remember to fill this thing out every year. That’s not too much to ask right?
Thanks again Chele and Laura for your thoughtful gift.
Do you keep an anniversary journal?
