While my hubby expected just another movie about Baseball, the Bollywood music and Indian scenery appealed to me the most, and the reason we both attended a Million Dollar Arm screening.
Based on the life of sports agent JB Bernstein (JB) played by Jon Hamm, Million Dollar Arm is the story of a man that in a last ditch effort to save his business creates something grand out of nothing, and changes many lives in the process.
The movie starts with JB anticipating the win of a new client and working out of a bare-bones office in Los Angeles. In the first few scenes it's not hard to notice JB's drive and ambition. Driven by fear as much as his entrepreneurial spirit, JB has a moment of serendipity where he see's the Baseball potential of Cricket players. He then begins the process of seeking, well, a Million Dollar Arm in India.
While in India, the team of Americans that JB brings together to manage the project, are definitely out of their element — the winners of the Million Dollar Arm contest, two teenage boys, who have never left their rural villages — are equally challenged when they come to the States. As the boys learn the finer points of baseball — JB, with the help of his charming friend Brenda (Lake Bell) — learns valuable life lessons about teamwork, commitment and what it means to be a family.
The highlight of the movie was seeing the boys dreams realized, but it was also quite touching to understand the feelings JB was going through as he saved his business and embarked on a new relationship.
By the end of the movie my heart was filled with warm and happy thoughts, I was inspired to conquer the world, and yes, I teared up a bit.
Million Dollar Arm, this far, is one of my favorite movies of the year and a film that I recommend you see when it opens this weekend.
Promise you will walk away smiling :)
