My hubby and me at the Landmark Theater Wine Bar
Rumor has it that the way you kick-off the new year creates an invisible roadmap that will guide the rest of the year. If there's any truth to this rumor, then 2014 is bound to take a nice route. Both my hubby, Maya and I had a quiet New Years celebration with my mom, brother, his wife and two kids. We then came home to sleep off the couple of drinks we had. (Note to self: Grand Marnier served over crushed ice is DIVINE!)Sometime between 1 am and 3 am my hubby and Maya fell asleep on the couch, and I wobbled to bed. I'm not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed because my "New Years Eve expectations" weren't met: no kissing or cuddling in bed. Sometime early morning of the 1st, my hubby and Maya came in the room. Hubby was apologetic: he was "tired" and simply fell asleep. He then asked something that I know took the best of him: "Do you want to get breakfast?"Breakfast?! My hubby is not a fan of breakfast. A simple invitation like this was his version of extending an olive branch. I bit and we happily got ready. (I still can't shower solo, so hubby had to help me in and out of the shower). It didn't take much to decide on where to have our first meal of the day (at this point it's lunch or brunch): Santa Monica Seafood, one of our favorite places. The drive to Santa Monica, five miles west, was beautiful. Sunny and perfect weather. I didn't want it to stop - first time (really) out in 26 days. But of course luck wasn't in our favor: Santa Monica Seafood was closed. Although a bit disappointed, we had seen a new bistro during our drive to Santa Monica: Truxton's American Bistro (http://www.truxtonsamericanbistro.com).Can I just say what a DELIGHT it was to have our first meal of 2014 at Truxton's?!OH. EM. GHEE.EVERYONE was extremely helpful, friendly and upbeat. Liz, our server, should receive an employee of the month award! The food was good, well priced, and worth a return back.
Our menu brunch/lunch drinks
After brunch/lunch we came home for a bit. I was exhausted. The waddle up and down the stairs was a bit much. Or, maybe it was the mimosa?I really wanted to see a movie, but hubby wasn't having it. He thought going out to lunch was enough for me. I pouted some and then posted on my Facebook wall that I "hoped to convince my hubby to take me to see a movie."Not ten minutes passed before my hubby came out of the office to invite me to see a movie. I was shocked and excited!! Maybe the vibe I put out there made him do it, I thought to myself. So with giddy anticipation we got tickets to see "The Wolf of Wall Street," and planned to get a quick bite to eat before the movie.
Our drinks at the Landmark Wine Bar
Other than brunch/lunch earlier in the day, this was the first time I was out in a public place since my surgery (26 days!). I felt a bit awkward getting out of the car after parking in the "disabled section." Instead of using the escalators and holding my hubby's hand, we had to find an elevator.Walking with so many people around me was scary. More than once someone walked straight at me without moving and I became more aware of the walkers around me.We went to the movie theater wine bar (yes, we're spoiled!) to get a drink and a bite to eat. I felt like a million bucks!Never underestimate the power of red lipstick and a fruity drink! Before we walked to the theater my hubby mentioned that one of his friends had texted him and suggested he take me to see a movie...I couldn't help but smile - my hubby does have good friends!I now call this woman, now our friend, my fairy godmother!Because the movie was sold out, we couldn't get a seat in the "disabled area." I waddled my way up the theater to the back row while passing by hipsters that found it convenient to sit in the disabled section. I felt as I has run a marathon! Hubby saw it in my face: I needed a drink. So he put it upon himself to get us bottled water and popcorn. It was going to be a long movie and he didn't want my "blood sugar to crash."The movie was great (I've said it once and I will say it again: Scorsese is a genius!) We got home shortly before midnight and cuddled on the couch with Maya.Such a perfect end to a perfect day. The first day of the new year.Happy new year to me :-)
