Key West Birthday Trip: Yoga and A Drag Show

Posted on the 20 August 2012 by Msadams @HilaryFerrell

After our jam packed fun in the sun day on the ocean, we opted to have our last full day in Key West be a little more low key.

We started early in the morning with yoga on the beach at the Southernmost on the Beach hotel.

Oddly enough, this turned out to be Mr. A’s idea.  Having watched me doing yoga at home 4 days a week, he thought I would love being able to incorporate some yoga into our Key West trip (even though he had never done yoga before).

The view from our class was absolutely amazing, much better than our living room which is my usual yoga spot.  The class ended up being an introductory level class (lucky for Mr. A) but it was pretty challenging in the intense, humid Key West heat.

Our instructor was really sweet and helpful–not a yoga drill sergeant.  She may of had the most soothing, relaxing voice ever.  Overall, we totally loved the class and we felt incredibly relaxed and loosened after class was over.

With all our muscles loosened, we walked back to our hotel to grab our complimentary breakfast.  Having stayed in plenty of B&Bs before, we weren’t expecting anything amazing.  Needless to say, we were pretty floored when our entrees arrived at the table.

Yup, that meal was included in our stay.  I had the delicious All-American and Mr. A had the brioche french toast.

After enjoying our delectable breakfast, we decided to head out on a touristy Old Town Trolley tour.  Normally, tourist traps aren’t our cup of tea, but we had done so much walking we were actually looking forward to having someone drive us around.

We picked up the trolley about 3 blocks from our hotel room and shelled out the $27/person to hop on.  Our tour guide Justin was incredibly personable and you could tell he really enjoyed his job and interacting with tourists.

The tour was over 90 minutes so I’ll just share a few cool highlights.

Outside of the Truman house (President Truman had a retreat in Key West that now serves as a tourist attraction) was this huge strangler fig tree.  This tree actual wraps all the way around the side of the house.

We also drove by Ernest Hemingway’s house.  This house is home to the famous 6 toed cats.

Further out from the main downtown, we strolled past Key West’s “beach.”  I say “beach” because all of the beaches found on Key West are man made.  The coral reef breaks waves so far out that Key West doesn’t get any sand so they actually have to import sand from the Bahamas for their beaches.

We also passed by the southernmost point, which marks the “southernmost” point of the United States.  Oddly enough, there’s a US army base that’s further south of this point so it’s not really the southernmost point.  Good tourist trap though.  People stand in line close to 30 minutes just to take a picture with the marker.

Once our tour was over, it was time for dinner at Blue Heaven.

The restaurant had a cool outside dining area, complete with a live band.

And roosters…

Yeah, the rooster part threw me for a loop too.  For some reason, I couldn’t help thinking that eating with roosters running around was pretty unsanitary.

The food was okay but nothing spectacular so I won’t bore you with it.  I guess nothing could really compare to our fantastic experience at Latitudes.

After dinner, Mr. A suggested that we go to one of Key West’s famous drag shows.  I was initially a little shocked considering his conservative background but he told me that he wanted to experience everything that Key West had to offer with an open mind.  I was so proud of him.

We ended up picking the drag show at 801 Bourbon Bar because it was the cheapest show on the island.  That way if we hated it it was no big deal.

The girls were beautiful and hilariously entertaining.  But it definitely was not an experience for the fate of heart.  Let’s just say one of the girls got up close and personal with Mr. A icon wink Key West Birthday Trip: Yoga and A Drag Show   Luckily, he was a great sport about the whole thing.  And I even got picked on a little too so I guess we were even.

If you are in Key West, check out the girls at 801 for a great night of fun.

The rest of the night we spent hopping around the world famous bars in Key West–Sloppy Joes, Rick’s, Green Parrot, Fat Tuesdays.  They were all pretty standard but our favorite was by far the Green Parrot, which apparently was voted one of the top bars in the country by Playboy–you’d never know it by the outside.

Our time in Key West came to a close that night and it came way too fast.  We had a great time in this laid back paradise and we can’t wait to go back.

You might have stolen our heart a little, Conch Republic.

What was your favorite part of Key West?
