Last-Minute Holiday Gifting on a Budget
If you are reading this post, you are probably dreading shopping for Christmas gifts at your local mall, or haven't decided exactly what to buy.
I get you. I've been there, and know that this is no small task.  The Holiday's are daunting, but gift giving shouldn't be.
With only a few hours away, and assuming you only have $200 in your pocket to buy gifts for your long list of family members, you may think this is an impossible task.  But it isn't - believe me!
First things first, create a budget only using the money you have on hand, without using credit cards or dipping into your savings.  (Note: Even if your budget is $200, I am confident that you can purchase gifts for 20 people!)
These are a few of my favorite, and well-received, time-tested and true Holiday gift (shopping) ideas that you can buy up-to the 11th hour:
Theme Your Gifts
If you are buying for Jr., Susie, the cat, and their parents, your budget won't go very far.  But if you buy a themed family gift, or activity that they like to do, you are likely to not only surprise them with your creativity, but also spend a lot less than you planned.
IDEA:  Family movie night gift basket.  Include a movie, movie candy, certificate for pizza home delivery, and microwave popcorn.  Approximate cost: $50 for a family of four!
Give the Gift of Time
If your friends are like mine, they are busy.  Busy coming, busy going, and busy hosting.  But the one thing we don't have for each-other is time.  Which is why this is one of my favorite gifts:  Dinner out...after the holidays.
IDEA:  Choose a restaurant that serves family style (maybe your favorite Chinese or Tapas joint), to make it more interactive and festive.  If you are cash-strapped, opt for a weekend breakfast, or evening dessert, instead of dinner or lunch). Approximate cost: $15-20 per person.
Give a Gift that Keeps on Giving
You will find that especially during the holidays, many local museums and independent theater groups, will have discounts and plans that will allow for families to joining for the price of one member. Approximate cost: $50+ per family for the entire year.
IDEA: Split any goodies that you receive when buying group memberships between friends.
Shop Local
Most major urban hubs have main streets or ethnic city hubs.  In the Westside of LA alone, we have Persian Square and The Sawtelle (Japense) Corridor.  For those unfamiliar with Main Streets, they   happen to be a hub for local artisans, bakeries and unique boutiques.  The best part about shopping at your local Main Street, is that you are not only helping the local economy, but you are also buying something that can't be found at your local mall.
IDEA: Local shop owners are more open to working within your budget and finding unique gifts that may not be on display.  Approximate cost: Can start as low as $5 per person!
I hope these ideas save you time and help you put the Merry back to Christmas! Most importantly, remember that it truly is the thought that counts!
