Did you know that Malibu has a Lagoon? I didn't either. But during a recent class, our professor took us on a half-day field trip to this hidden gem.
Located just 13 miles north of Santa Monica, the the Malibu Lagoon is located where the Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, and is home to grunions, monarch butterflies, and tide pools. I was told that sometimes you can see gray whales from a distance!
While my classmates and I played along the shore and discovered new marine creatures, many visitors fish in the area, while other picnic and bird watch.
For those that prefer to relax, the lagoon also has a beach with wetland areas, saltwater marsh and seasonal flower gardens.
Visiting the Malibu Lagoon was a highlight of that particular class, and an unexpected experience - even for a jaded Westsider like myself.
