Mr. A and I knew that we wanted to end our night of dancing with a serious bang. The hard part was choosing between two seminal classics, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer.”
Although I love them both, “Livin’ on A Prayer” has a really special place in my heart. Back in my college days (wow, that makes me sound old), it was my sorority sisters and my favorite party song. I can remember many nights in the basement of the frat house next door dancing my butt off to 80s classics. For some reason, “Livin’ On A Prayer” became our going out anthem. We used to joke that we wouldn’t leave the party until we heard “Livin’ On A Prayer.” I can’t even begin to count the number of amazing nights that were ended rocking out to that song. So how could I not end the biggest party of my life with an old time favorite?
To be fair to the awesomeness that is Journey, we decided to play “Don’t Stop Believing” as our second to last song (think of it as an opening act). That song in and of itself got everyone back onto the dance floor.
And then that “Livin’ On A Prayer” opening riff started and the talk box kicked in and the crowd literally erupted. I can’t tell you how many squeals and fist pumps proceeded “Tommy used to work on the docks…” Now you want to listen to the song huh?
There’s just something about this song that triggers instant screaming and fist pumping. I love that first time that you get into the chorus and the whole crowd starts screaming “ooohhhhhh.”
“Oh, we’re half way thereOh oh, livin’ on a prayerTake my hand we’ll make it I swearOh oh, livin’ on a prayerLivin’ on a prayer”
I can tell you that it’s the loudest I’ve screamed and the hardest I’ve fist pumped. Everyone around us was rocking out as hard as they could too (even our preacher).
Speaking of our preacher, I was going to insert the awesome picture that our photographers snagged of him dancing (he finally agreed to come to the dance floor just for this song) but someone made mention that he was happy he wasn’t featured in yesterday’s post. Me thinks, I shouldn’t upset the preacher. Something about bad karma and losing my “in” with the Big Man.
There are some amazing pictures of other people rocking out though.
Can’t you just hear us screaming “We’ve got to hold on ready or not; You live for the fight when it’s all that you’ve got.”
I still get goose bumps thinking about all the energy in that room. It doesn’t hurt that I listened to “Livin’ On A Prayer” like 11 times while writing this recap.
And if I squeeze my eyes closed hard enough, I can see all my favorite people in a crowd around me jumping and doing their best Jon Bon Jovi imitation. I’m really lucky to be able to add another memory to one of my favorite songs. Now every time I hear it, not only do I smile remembering that creepy old frat basement covered in Milwaukee’s Best cans (hey, we were poor, don’t judge) but I also remember that time the day of my life was capped off by the most amazing fist pumping session I’ve ever seen.
What song did you pick for your last song?
