REVIEW! Darling Spuds Hand Cooked Potato Chips
Posted on the 21 March 2013 by Thereviewaddict @TheReviewAddictI was recently sent some crisps to try from Buckinghamshire based Darling Spuds. I had not seen these crisps before but I had heard of their other brand: Salty Dog. Anyway Darling Spuds was created to be a more wholesome, natural snack and their Tomato, Olive and Oregano flavor crisps were the joint winners of the Savoury Biscuits and Snacks category in the FreeFrom Food awards 2012. Their crisps are gluten free, vegetarian friendly and free of any GMOs. They are also 20% lower in fat than standard crisps.
I was sent 2 flavours to review: Fire Roasted Jalapeno Peppers and Sea Salt and Italian Balsamic Vinegar. As well as the Tomato, Olive and Oregano flavor that I mentioned before, they also do a Sour Cream with a hint of Mexican Chilli flavour, Crushed Natural Sea Salt flavor and West Country Cheddar, Leek and Pink Peppercorns flavor. All bags are 40g and contain around 190 calories.
I started with the Fire Roasted Jalapeno Peppers flavor which are in the pinkish coloured bag; I loved the little devil potato on the front! When I opened the packet I could smell a lovely peppery smell and I could see that the crisps had a reddish tinge to them along with little red flecks of chilli. The crisps had a lovely crunch and the flavor was quite intense with a fair a bit of a kick to it; it was delicious!
A lot of salt and vinegar crisps are not strong enough for my liking, I am a huge fan of vinegar so I like that to be the dominant flavor. The Sea Salt and Italian Balsamic Vinegar crisps from Darling Spuds were quite frankly awesome. The balsamic smell was pretty strong and I really enjoyed the sweet, yet strong vinegary taste.
Verdict I loved both flavours from Darling Spuds and I would go as far to say that Sea Salt and Italian Balsamic Vinegar crisps are the nicest salt and vinegar crisps that I have ever tasted. I loved the texture, they have the satisfying crunch of hand cooked crisps without being overly greasy. I really like the sound of the other flavours, they are interesting combinations; I must track these down!
You can follow Darling Spuds on Twitter and they also have a Facebook page here.
